Slovakian City Has Been Named Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2026

Trenčín is situated in the northwestern part of Slovakia. As a result of the European Union competition, the city was selected to be one of the European Capitals of Culture 2026. Concerts, exhibitions, performances, art installations and festivals are just a few of the events in Trenčín’s unique cultural programme, which takes place throughout the year.

Why Trenčín?

The Slovak town of Trenčín, one of the oldest in the country, impressed the European jury with its ambitious project ‘Awakening Curiosity’. It is designed to promote culture, highlighting the historical, archaeological and artistic heritage of the town.

It can be traced back to Roman times and can still be seen throughout the town. This rich heritage is also evident in its magnificent medieval castle and historic centre, whose narrow streets, colourful houses and historical character are unique.

The whole year is also being transformed into the cultural epicentre of Trenčín, which is to be transformed into a cultural hub with an extensive programme of events in public spaces, in the castle and museums during the 2026 celebrations.

A Year of Culture and Creativity

The European capital of culture is bringing a huge array of cultural events to the city. Exciting concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions, contemporary art projects, workshops and installations await the residents and visitors in various locations in Trenčín.

The programme is not just for traditional cultural venues, but to embed art and culture into everyday places. Streets, squares, public buildings and historic sites are opening up to the greater culture.

Exploring Trenčín in 2026

Celebrations are an attraction for visitors who will get to know the town of Trenčín and its history, as well as its present-day culture. The medieval castle is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city, and the historic centre is home to many of its architectural highlights.

The 2026 programme also explores the connection between the city’s history and its future, fostering an interest in the city’s heritage and providing new opportunities for artists, residents and visitors alike.

Trenčín is promoting this city on the Slovakian cultural map with its history, art and public events this year, during which the city is being celebrated as the European Capital of Culture.
