Pakistani security forces have enhanced their counter-terrorism efforts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which has seen a spate of terrorist attacks. Security forces recently killed seven militants and recovered weapons and ammunition in an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan.
This also included a larger government “Azm-i-Istehkam” operation aimed at dismantling the militant network and improving security along Afghanistan’s borders.
Rising Security Concerns
In recent years, attacks on security personnel, police stations and civilians have been on the rise in K-P. The government has beefed up intelligence-led operations and joint security initiatives in at-risk districts, as a result of the upsurge in violence.
North Waziristan is still being considered an important area due to its rugged topography and its border with Afghanistan. Militant groups are still using the area for planning and launching attacks, security officials report.
Government Steps Up Response
Pakistan’s civilian leadership and military command have remained strong in favour of enhanced anti-terrorism measures. Authorities have repeated their call to eliminate the militant infrastructure and to avoid another attack.
The government has also renamed the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as ‘Fitna al Khawari’ – which is a policy to present the group as an anti-state militant outfit and not a religious movement.
Continued Security Operations
In recent times, operations have been carried out in various parts of KP that suggest that pressure is being put on militant groups in Pakistan. The security forces will likely continue intelligence gathering, area clearance and border security as they try to get a grip on the current threat.
The ongoing violence underscores the security issues in the province and the need for ongoing counter-terrorism and border-management efforts.
