The Moshood Abiola National Stadium, located in the federal capital, Abuja, has been indefinitely closed following an announcement that a security issue was detected at the stadium.
This was announced by the stadium’s management on 4th August 2026 following a report by the Nigeria Police Force (NPR) that there was a security issue surrounding the stadium. Access restrictions were imposed on the night of 3rd August.
Authorities told everyone inside the facility to exit peacefully and told the public they should not go to the stadium or congregate near its gates. The closure was enforced and public safety maintained by security personnel.
The management also requested the general public to be calm and adhere to the directions of the law enforcement agencies. Therefore, sporting activities, training sessions and other events planned to be held at the facility could be impacted until the security situation is checked.
More information from the Police Headquarters will be needed before further updates will be provided, officials said.
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium is one of the largest sporting facilities in Nigeria, and frequently hosts football matches, athletics events, training sessions and other public events.
The closure serves as a reminder of the security checks that can be conducted at large gatherings of people, especially where there are concerns about potential threats. The public is urged to rely on official announcements for the dates when access to the stadium will be open.
