Kenya has officially filed a formal protest which rejects the recent United Nations report. The disputed report claims that Kenyan soldiers who served in a United Nations Security Council-endorsed mission to Haiti committed serious sexual offenses.
Official Protest Over Allegations
The diplomatic response was led by Kenya’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi. Mudavadi wrote a formal letter to the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in which he expressed his deep concern about the allegations that first emerged in August.
The Kenyan government through its Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, defends its officers who are currently working to address the security crisis in the Caribbean nation.
Details of the Secretary-General’s Report
The UN chief published a public report last week which describes the operational activities of the Kenyan-led multinational force that supports the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti. The document states that mission officers from the operation face accusations of four separate incidents which include rape and additional types of sexual violence.
The report shows that three of the alleged victims in these cases are minors. The UN framework for conduct and discipline states that a 12-year-old and two 16-year-olds are among the victims which creates major international concern about the behavior of the deployed personnel.
