The Italian news agency quoted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, at Verona, saying, “in the present circumstances, we have resolved to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel.”
The agreement covers the aspects of exchange of military equipment, technical research, facilitation of trade agreements, especially in the defence sector and research and development in military affairs.
In 2003, Italy and Israel signed a military cooperation agreement, which was ratified by the Italian parliament in 2005. In earlier agreements, it would automatically renew on April 13 every five years.
Stopping the renewal, according to the agency, would send a political message to the Israeli attacks and airstrikes in Lebanon, which have already been condemned by Italy and other European governments.
