Sweden and Finland have jointly carried out the country’s first-ever interception and identification mission of a Russian military aircraft over the Gulf of Finland. The coordinated movement reflects the high level of security in the Baltic Sea region currently in force.
This is an airspace that has always been sensitive, and it has been on high alert since the invasion of the Ukraine in 2022. This area has had a series of troubling incidents, such as sightings of an unauthorized drone, multiple airspace violations and serious disruptions to gas pipelines.
The Finnish Air Force and the Swedish Armed Forces scrambled fighters to intercept the Russian flight formation in the framework of the Quick Reaction Alert. The formation that was intercepted was a transport plane surrounded by several fighter aircraft.
The mission of the two countries was a clear example of the preparedness and trust developed between the two countries, he said, adding that this would further improve the overall strength of regional alliances.
On social media, Kristersson highlighted the unprecedented vulnerabilities that the Baltic Sea is currently experiencing, while also stressing that it is better protected than ever before in history. As of now, there’s been no official comment from the Russian embassies in Helsinki and Stockholm on the aerial interception.
In response to Russia’s full-scale offensive in 2022, both the Finnish Government and its Swedish counterpart scrapped their longstanding military non-alignment policy, and officially joined NATO. This historic integration will bring their defense operation permanently into closer contact with the other Atlantic alliance members, namely Denmark, Norway, Iceland and the Baltic republics of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
