Chile’s Student Confederations mobilised thousands of students in the Chilean capital city of Santiago on 3rd June to protest against austerity measures by President José Antonio Kast.
The initial mass gathering became violent when it was met by police, in which at least 25 people got hurt, including 12 policemen.
The fighting escalated as people threw stones and sticks, damaging public property, and police tried to disperse the crowds, local sources report.

The disturbances saw several central Santiago metro stations shut down temporarily and caused major traffic disruptions in the capital city.
The protests call into question a broad, multi-year fiscal consolidation program by Kast that proposes to trim $6 billion in public spending over 18 months, including across-the-board cuts of about 3 per cent in government ministries.
Student leaders, who are backed by teachers’ associations and labour unions, say education has been hit particularly hard and that less money may have a negative impact on schools, universities and public services.
Additional mass mobilisations are planned to take place if their demands are not met, organisers claim.
