Instagram is working on a new feature that will let users see content on the platform but won’t be able to like, comment or do anything else.
According to a technology report, Meta-owned photo-sharing app Instagram is internally testing a feature called Read Only Mode.
The feature would allow the users to get access to posts and other content on Instagram without any ability to like posts, comment on posts, send messages, follow other users or watch other Instagram Stories.
As per media reports, the mode may be for allowing users to browse Instagram in a more limited fashion, even though they don’t engage in regular social media activities.
Very early reports indicate that this feature may be implemented for Instagram Plus users, which is likely to be a paid Instagram subscription. But there has been no official announcement concerning this.
The Read Only Mode is in the process of being tested internally and is not available at this time to the general public, says an Instagram spokesperson. The spokesperson said that it is premature to state whether the feature will be officially launched or not, as the company tests various features regularly.
The feature, if introduced, could provide a new avenue of content consumption on Instagram. But its ultimate shape, availability, and, if applicable, subscription criteria remain to be determined.
In a recent blog post, OpenAI announced that it will be shutting down its standalone AI-powered browser, ChatGPT Atlas, within a year of its launch. The company cited the introduction of a new Chrome extension and the ChatGPT desktop app, which will include the company’s most important browser and AI agent features, as reasons for the shutdown.
Atlas, an AI-first browser powered by ChatGPT and released for macOS in October 2025, will come to the end of its support on 9th August 2026. The information about users will be sent to them via email and notifications within the app before being retired, OpenAI said.
