Discord Faces Possible Ban in the Philippines, While Reddit Gets the Green Light

Discord has been banned, while Reddit was allowed to continue its services after the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Centre (CICC) gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the two social media platforms in the wake of the school shootings in parts of the country.

The order to Discord issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Wednesday night only covered users of Globe Telecoms and DITO.

Globe users have been notified that access to this website is blocked in compliance with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) directive, based on their assessment and identification of the website.

The directive followed the recent school shootings in South Cotabato, Zamboanga City and Tacloban City over the past few months.

In the meantime, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) issued requests for removal of content that allegedly “defamed politicians and public figures,” Reddit said.

None of the content reported was removed as there were no violations of the Reddit Rules and the content in question was criticism of public figures, accusations of corruption by public officials and general commentary on news of current events.
