President Donald Trump announced that he planned to impose fresh 100 percent tariffs on Chinese imports starting next month as a retaliatory measure to what he described as aggressive actions of China in the field of export regulations.
In a post on social media, Trump indicated that the new tariffs would become effective on Nov. 1.
According to Trump, the move was in reaction to the extraordinarily aggressive Chinese stance on trade in terms of export restrictions.
As per Trump, the post was informed that China had adopted the most extreme stance on Trade ever known by sending a letter to the World that was extremely hostile and that they were going to impose large-scale Export Controls on virtually all of their products on November 1st, 2025, and it was a moral disgrace.
The current tariffs on Chinese imports to the U.S. are 30, as opposed to 145, which was their highest point earlier this year.
According to Trump, “the new tariffs on China would be on top of any tariffs that they are already paying.”
Besides the new tariffs, Trump also stated that the U.S would also apply the Export Controls to any and all critical software.
The tweet was posted following the threat of fresh tariffs on China issued by Trump in the morning, which provoked a selloff of stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 385.0 or by 0.8. As the S&P 500 declined by 1.25 percent and the Nasdaq lost 1.75 percent, the decline fell mainly among the tech stocks.
A day prior to the announcement, Trump was informed by China that the country had imposed new restrictions on rare-earth minerals, which are major materials in the manufacture of semiconductors utilized in producing numerous artificial intelligence applications and home appliances.
Trump, in an interview with reporters later that same day in the Oval Office, branded the recent actions of China as shocking and indicated that they were unexpected.
Trump responded by saying, “This is not something that I instigated. This was merely a reaction to something that they did. And they did not actually point it in our direction. It was directed to the entire world.”
“Nevertheless,” he replied, “we will see.”
Trump had earlier posted on social media in relation to the China trade policy and wrote, “There is no way that China should be allowed to hold the World hostage, but that appears to have been their long-term intention,” Trump said.
As a reply, Trump threatened to impose the highest amount of tariffs on Chinese goods entering the US, despite it being potentially painful, as he said.
Trump also hinted earlier in the day that he would cancel a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“This was a true surprise not only to me, but to the whole of the Leaders of the Free World. I would have met President Xi in two weeks, at APEC, in South Korea, but no longer appears to have any purpose in doing so, as my earlier post said.”
Later, Trump told reporters that he did not cancel the meeting with Xi; he was going to South Korea but was not sure whether the summit would occur.
“What will happen, I will see,” Trump said.
This is in the face of the trade truce between China and the US, which is yet to expire in less than a month.
