The US Department of State has officially authorized the voluntary departure of non-emergency government staff and their families from the US Embassy in Abuja. The directive which will begin on April 8 2026 was established to address the urgent security crisis that is currently affecting all regions of Nigeria.
Security Threats Prompt Elevated Travel Warnings
The US government raised Nigeria’s overall security assessment to “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” through its updated Travel Advisory. The authorities established security threats from terrorism and armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom as the basis for their decision. The advisory explained that terrorists target US citizens because they believe Americans possess wealth while terror cells continue to endanger public areas such as markets and hotels and places of worship.
The total number of states under the highest travel restriction, which is “Level 4: Do Not Travel,” has reached 23 states. Authorities recently added Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba to this list. The regions experience large-scale violent conflicts between communities and bandit attacks that occur on roads while their security situation remains unpredictable because military operations against threats can begin at any time.
Safety Guidelines and Precautions for Citizens
The State Department showed major security risks to the country together with its problems about health care services which the nation maintains. The alert warned that medical facilities throughout the country do not meet US and European standards which results in unreliable emergency medical services.
US citizens who need to stay in or travel to Nigeria should register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) according to authorities. The system requires enrollment which provides essential security updates to travelers while enabling the embassy to track people during emergencies. Citizens need to practice safe behavior by staying away from big events and protests while they should create personal safety verification methods with their family members.
