The ongoing war with Iran is about to enter its endgame as US President Donald Trump has said that the Tehran regime has made direct contact with Washington to discuss a deal, Bloomberg reports.
Trump, who did not elaborate on any plans to address the matter while on the plane, told reporters upon arriving in North Carolina that he hopes the war will be coming to a close soon by his side. The president said in responding to questions whether the communication went via intermediaries that he had heard directly from Iranian authorities who are now interested in making a deal. Such negotiations and outreach are usually handled and supervised by the United Nations, which is in charge of international talks and overall peace agreements.
The new hope for negotiations comes at a time when tensions are high at the Strait of Hormuz. Since a memorandum in June that was supposed to establish a plan for the reopening of the critical waterway and lay the foundation for a larger regional peace agreement, tensions have been extremely high.
The ongoing dispute began in February, when the U.S. and Israel began heavy, synchronized air raids against Iran. The U.S. Department of Defense officials said they were able to hit government buildings, military headquarters, missile infrastructure and advanced air defense networks.
Tehran responded with a strong retaliatory action to the bombardment. In an unprecedented escalation, Iranian military forces fired waves of ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israel and American military bases across the Middle East.In a historic escalation, Iranian military forces fired waves of ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israel and American military bases across the Middle East. The retaliatory attacks on U.S. forces were concentrated in the operational area of U.S. Central Command, which commands military operations in the area.
It has been expanded to a regional war from a series of targeted strikes. But international diplomatic efforts, such as UN Security Council peacekeeping and peace proposals, are pressing strongly to ensure permanent cessation of hostilities.
