TikTok is enhancing its comment area. On 3rd September, the social network announced that it’s introducing new features to its comments sections, such as Live Photo comments, photo carousel comments, comment polls, and even voice comments.

The add-on features are being borrowed from messaging apps as it seeks to continue to grow its engagement numbers. The company says it’s trying to create a space where people can hang out and engage in conversation with one another, instead of just dropping comments under a video.

“From the start, sound and music have been integral to TikTok’s story, helping to make songs trend and audio clips become jokes that can be shared throughout the app,” TikTok wrote on its blog post. “So now we’re bringing that same spirit to the comment section where people add and listen to audio comments directly under any video.”

To make a voice comment, users must press the microphone symbol in the comment box and voice their message for up to 1 minute. After the voice comment is added, any user may tap to listen to the comment.

TechCrunch reports that the voice comments will be governed by the same Community Guidelines as the rest of TikTok’s content. The company employs a mix of human and automated review methods, such as speech-to-text transcription, to identify and delete content that is in violation of the company’s policies.

It will roll out to users 18+ all over the world in the coming month.

Additionally, creators can now add a poll when commenting on their own videos, a feature that had been previously available to some, but is now available globally.

The polls can be used for a variety of purposes, such as choosing the next video idea, selecting an outfit, planning a meal, and more. The creator has a choice of up to 5 options for the viewers to vote on and can determine the time period of the poll. Voters can see results as they are added in the comment section as votes are tallied. 

People can now add up to nine photos in one comment, whereas before they could add just one photo at a time, using the photo carousel comments. Plus, for the first time, users can now upload Live Photo comments to TikTok, which TikTok claims will enable a “burst of motion” for others to view a quick preview of the moment before looking at the entire image.

Live Photo comments are now available globally, and photo carousel comments will roll out globally over the next month.
