Under the sponsorship of the Korea Cultural Heritage Utilisation Council, the Korea Heritage Service will conduct the “2026 Korea Heritage Week” in October throughout 16 local governments in five regions throughout the country.
The third year of Heritage Week came to an end on 23rd September 2006, an annual event that gave the public the opportunity to discover the importance of heritage sites in their immediate locality through first-hand activities.
This year will be the same as last year and focus on Korean food culture. It connects heritage sites with regional food via five special programs, 380 individual local heritage programs and a mobile stamp tour event that tours the country.
In the Seoul-Gangwon area, at Yanghwajin Ferry and Jamdubong Peak Historic Site, which was the centre of Joseon-era trade and shipping on the Han River, visitors can experience the history of the region’s food culture by cooking and eating the dishes associated with it, and enjoy a performance of traditional food history music.
The program, which takes place in Gyeonggi and Incheon, includes a tour and tasting of dishes including “jajangmyeon” in the Japanese-influenced food culture of the former port district of Incheon, where many of the colonial buildings were created, such as the bank and shipping company buildings.
In the Chungcheong region, a programme in Cheongju offers a glimpse into the city’s traditional cuisine and drinks with a local recipe book that has been around for a century. In Jeolla, a program at the ancient irrigation reservoir Byeokgolje in Gimje combines a history lesson with a hands-on lesson in cooking with local rice. A nighttime experience at the Gyeongju Choi Family House in the Gyeongsang area features traditional court music, homemade rice wine and traditional food.
The special programs are all free, but reservations are required online. Registration for spots is staggered, first come, first served, by region, starting in September. You can access the event on the official website(k-heritageweeks.kr) from Sept 14-18 website.
