The “From Zhuji Alley to the World” Guangfu Cultural Exchange Tour took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 27th. The archipelagic country’s diversified culture and the thousand-year-old cultural heritage of the Zhuji region were intertwined beautifully through detailed historical exhibitions, authentic Canton opera excerpts, and funny Canton stand-up comedy. The event inspired awe amongst all generations of overseas Chinese in Indonesia as they learned more about the Canton Opera and came to a completely unexpected experience of the inheritance of Zhuji Alley.

Zhuji Alley has been the birthplace of the early settlers of Guangdong. Back then, Guangdong abounded with people who left their homes to venture out of the alley, heading south and then out across the ocean to Southeast Asia. They introduced the Cantonese language, opera and folk traditions to this flourishing country and settled there.

Perhimpunan Warga Guangzhao Seluruh Indonesia Secretary-General Huang Xian’an mentioned that many Indonesian Chinese originated from the Guangfu people. However, the development of the Guangfu culture has been somewhat incomplete in recent years in the region. Huang said the exchange event was very timely and he hopes it can help to further promote and preserve Guangfu culture in Indonesia.
