Rescue teams are working hard to search for any survivors of an earthquake that took place in Indonesia. The number of fatalities is also increasing due to a powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude.

The tragedy caused heavy losses in the Flores region, including houses, hospitals, schools, and other buildings. About 160 homes were said to be damaged, and thousands of people were evacuated to temporary shelters, while those in need of assistance were being organised.

Rescue efforts have been severely hindered by the landslides that have closed roads and rubble that has made it difficult to reach potentially trapped victims. In several affected communities, electricity and telecommunications services were also affected.

The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings, which were issued to residents and asked them to seek refuge on higher ground, but not to enter damaged buildings as there is a risk of aftershocks. There were a number of aftershocks, including a 6.1 magnitude quake.

Waves reaching heights of up to 1.6 metres were reported in some areas of the coast of Flores. Emergency teams were still on the scene providing medical assistance and distributing food and other vital supplies to the displaced community.

A large number of aid kits were distributed among the affected areas by the government, and international organizations were providing help for the relief operations in the affected areas.

Indonesia, being an island nation, is highly susceptible to earthquakes as it lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire region, where earthquakes occur quite often. There have been instances of massive earthquakes and tsunamis occurring previously in Flores Island, such as the one that occurred in 1992 with a magnitude of 7.7.

The recent earthquake once again reminded us of the dangers of living in an earthquake-prone area in Indonesia.
