Fighting in Fizi territory of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to escalate because there is no indication of when it will end. The conflict primarily involves fighting between the Congolese national army and the M23 rebel group which is widely recognized as a hazardous organization.
Local armed militias currently provide active combat support to government forces. The M23 insurgency allegedly receives both operational and logistical support from Rwanda which creates severe geopolitical challenges for the region.
