The Nigerian military has stopped the attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram terrorists in troops’ strongholds in Gajigana, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State, it has been reported.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency (COIN) expert of the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, shared the information in a post on Friday on his X account.

The attack took place late on June 3, when a significant force of terrorists on motorcycles tried to breach the defences in the area before launching a large-scale attack on a FOB, the report said.

According to reports, troops fired sustained gunfire at the attackers, slowing their progress and inflicting casualties, while coordinated aerial surveillance and strike support hampered their progress.

The attackers were observed in their attacks in widely dispersed motorcycle formations, with some 15 riders seen getting scattered in various directions under heavy defensive pressure during the encounter.

During the shooting, one of the gunmen who escaped was shot and killed, and other gunmen took cover in the surrounding terrain.

After the engagement, troops pursued and cleared along the withdrawal routes, recovering one motorcycle and ammunition rounds which were thought to have been dropped during the withdrawal.

Meanwhile, military security has been beefed up in the North-East theatre, where the military has stepped up air and ground operations in some strategic corridors in Borno State.

The enhanced operations will be carried out on routes connecting Auno, Benisheikh, Ngamdu, Konduga, Mafa and Maiduguri metropolis and around Alau Dam and other identified infiltration routes, based on intelligence reports that could indicate possible regrouping of insurgent elements.

The operations, which are part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations, are part of a broader push to weaken the capabilities of the terrorists and to stop them from attacking military and civilian targets in the area, authorities said.
