Meta is out with a new app that didn’t get much attention. It’s called Forum, and they’re simply taking a Reddit-style Facebook Groups and making it into a product of its own. According to Meta, it’s a space designed for meaningful discussions, genuine answers, and communities they care about.
The app seems to be the first to have been seen by social media consultant Matt Navarra.
When you connect to Forum with your Facebook account, you’ll join groups, your profile and everything else you do with Facebook right here. You log in as a ‘Nickname’ as the normal ‘Facebook’ app does. As for your groups, not only do you keep them on Facebook, but anything you share in your groups is also reflected on the main Facebook page, too.
Group conversations are the key component in the feeds. By allowing people to view what has been said by real users, rather than what may be trending, and by making it easy to get back to a conversation, it aims to be a more transparent experience, Meta says.
In addition, Forum harnesses the power of AI twice. Users can post a question on an “Ask” tab, and receive answers that are sewn together from posts in various groups. There’s also an admin assistant to assist in moderation and in keeping the groups running on a day-to-day basis.
Meta’s been down this street before. It launched an app for groups dedicated to making community sharing easier in 2014. The latter version was in operation for three years until the company decided to shut down in 2017.
It is not possible to get Forum without any companion. Instants is an application to share “disappearing” photos on Instagram with friends, which Meta released last month. Both are pushing for a wider push and more products to be pushed in the market. Zuckerberg recently told employees that the company can now create more apps owing to the efficiencies provided by artificial intelligence, and plans to ship more apps than ever before, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Talking with Zuckerberg, he said that “So Chris and I have been talking about ‘all right, well can we build 50 new apps?’”. Yeah, maybe. Let’s do just a couple of first, and then, like, we’ll try to do 50.
The question of whether 50 new Meta apps are wanted remains to be seen. The first few ones are generally similar to popular games. Instants leverages the ideas of BeReal and Snapchat, and Meta Edits, which was released last year, is the virtual copy of ByteDance’s CapCut app.
