Apple’s New Anti-Theft Feature Could Stop iPhone Snatchers in Their Tracks

One of the features Apple is working on for the new iPhones is an intelligent system that will be able to detect if a device is suddenly being removed from its user and instantly lock it down to prevent “snatch theft” scenarios, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The feature is based on motion sensors found in the iPhone, reports said on Wednesday, including the accelerometer, and determines if an unusual or aggressive move is being used in case someone is trying to steal the phone.

However, if it senses suspicious activity, it would automatically lock to stop anyone from accessing personal information or opening applications.

The new feature will be integrated into Apple’s current security measures, such as “Find My,” “Activation Lock”, and “Stolen Device Protection” (SDP), which has been around for a while and is based on biometric security and delayed security actions for sensitive settings and user accounts.

There are also reports that the system might eventually be integrated into the Apple Watch, which will alert the user to a theft attempt if the iPhone suddenly leaves its owner’s sight, thus automatically taking necessary precautions.

Other Android devices also have anti-theft systems, like “Theft Detection Lock” with AI and motion analysis.

Apple hasn’t officially confirmed that there will be a release date, but some have said that software references indicate that the feature may be coming to future iOS updates.
