In a series of air attacks in the Lake Chad area of Borno state, troops have reportedly killed over 30 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
The operation was accompanied by “credible Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) reports” that there has been an increase in terrorist activity, which includes the transportation of logistics using waterways around the Kaniram Island region.
Zagazola said, “an ISR platform was deployed to the general area, where it established overhead presence and confirmed the sighting of around 31 boats scattered along the riverbank and related human activity consistent with ISWAP fighters.”
“When positively identified, the Air Component launched precision strike operations in accordance with the established Rules of Engagement, as well as targeting procedures.
“The first strike was effective in disrupting the base of terrorists and in crippling the logistical capability of the terrorists by damaging some of the boats that were in use to move and supply the terrorists across the waterways.
“Further ISR monitoring revealed that the terrorists were making attempts to regroup in nearby vegetation, which were followed by strikes.”
The newspaper reported that a second blow was aimed at approximately eight terrorists and killed them, and others were spotted running to seek refuge spots.
Another group of terrorists, approximately 15 terrorists, who had been hiding under trees, were killed by another strike.
During the battle, according to Zagazola, a battle damage assessment (BDA) confirmed the high losses, with the rest of the terrorists dispersing out of nearby hideouts.
The publication said, “in another strike mission at Sowolwolo, military air assets were deployed and neutralised nine other terrorists identified within the area. Remaining elements were observed to flee in disarray, indicating loss of cohesion and command structure.
“The Nigerian Military Command reaffirmed that the operation demonstrated that it is dedicated to precision in its targeting, limited collateral damage and maximum operational impact against terrorist elements.”
According to Zagazola, the military indicated that the ISR missions and air strikes would go on together with the ground operations to build on the gains made and limit the movement of terrorists.
The military also reiterated its commitment to ensuring air superiority and assisting in restoring peace and stability in the north-east.
