Rising Tensions Following Japan’s Taiwan Strait Transit
The recent Chinese military exercises serve as a response to Japanese naval activities which have been developing in the area. A Japanese military vessel completed its safe passage through the Taiwan Strait which is known as a highly sensitive area just days before the Chinese military exercises began.
The Ikazuchi, a frontline destroyer which belongs to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, completed its transit last Friday. The ship was en route to the Philippines to participate in the Balikatan multinational military exercises.
The naval movements which occur between both sides demonstrate ongoing strategic activities throughout the area. The two countries maintain their surveillance of each other’s naval activities which occur in the disputed maritime zone that sees heavy ship traffic.
