The Lebanese National News Agency reports that Israeli military units have completely demolished the ancient shrine of Prophet Shimon the Just. The sacred site of religious significance and historical research functioned as a mosque which was established in Shamaa town that belongs to the Tyre district of southern Lebanon.
The shrine existed within an ancient citadel area which UNESCO officially recognized as a protected site, thus it became subject to international cultural preservation laws. Local media reports that Israel Defense Forces troops used bulldozers to demolish the holy site before they conducted a precise airstrike that targeted the area. The hills near Shamaa experienced artillery shelling throughout early Monday morning which occurred at irregular intervals.
The monument has experienced destruction multiple times throughout its history. The shrine suffered complete destruction during the 2014 conflict, but local residents who regard the site as a vital community mosque and historical landmark restored it through their dedicated restoration efforts.
Regional Escalation and Humanitarian Impact
The protected World Heritage site is experiencing destruction while military conflict in the region reaches its most intense point.
