A total of 132 cultural heritage sites in Iran have been directly and indirectly damaged, suffering serious destruction, said Secretary of Iran’s National Commission for UNESCO, Hassan Fartousi, at a press conference, APA’s Tehran bureau reports.
He says the monuments that were destroyed in the war are the Golestan Palace in Tehran, the Chehel Sotoun Palace in Isfahan, as well as other complexes, which are part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO and are of importance not only to Iran.
Another heritage site that has suffered damage is the Falak-ol-Aflak Castle in Lorestan province, which is being readied to enter the UNESCO World Heritage List.
He emphasised that the reports concerning the damaged monuments will be prepared both in written and visual copies and sent to the UNESCO commission.
Hassan Fartousi added that another victim of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes has been universities in Iran, with 149 cases being reported.
Fartousi further stated that the nations of the region should make sure that the Hague Convention is implemented, according to which the cultural heritage should be preserved in the case of armed conflicts.
