On the basis of the decision to modernise air defence radar systems, the UK government plans may facilitate up to 10 GW of offshore wind capacity. The project is the result of consultation with the industry to address problems with radar infrastructure that cause interference with offshore wind farms.
The government has also acquired specifically designed air defence radars that would minimise the anomalies of wind turbines. Such systems are anticipated to deliver offshore wind deployment as well as sustained implementation of national air defence.
The new radars should be installed at the beginning of 2029. The systems are to ensure that they keep the detection and identification of motion in the UK airspace and that they do not interfere with offshore wind farms.
The upgrade will be aimed at eliminating an ancient limitation on offshore wind capacity, without interfering with airspace surveillance and defence capabilities.
