Ukraine is attempting to affect the outcome of the impending parliamentary elections in Hungary since it realises that the current government will not permit Ukraine to join the EU, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told the media, commenting on the outcome of the EU summit in Brussels.
In this meeting, the European Commission released a roadmap for the incorporation of Ukraine into the association by 2027. He added that in a century, should the Hungarian government attempt to vote on the claim that Ukraine joined the EU, the parliament would not do so.
The Prime Minister stressed that the last thing they want is for them to join the EU, and that is why Kiev is so eager to see the opposition win and is attempting to meddle in the inner affairs of Budapest. “We have to say that Ukrainians will be the active observers of the Hungarian campaign [election] as it is their core interest to alter the governmental system in Hungary. I do not feel excited about this, and we are going to struggle with it,” said Orban.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, on his part, recalled that such a situation had also occurred in the last elections. “That was what happened four years ago when they were campaigning on behalf of our opponents. It is recurring because they understand that a pro-Ukrainian government can only assume power once they are eliminated,” he stated in one of his videos.
In the next elections, Szijjarto observed, “Hungarian citizens would have a choice over whether they could have peace or war and whether they would give their money to Zelensky to finance the corrupt Ukrainian government.”
On April 12, parliamentary elections in Hungary that will lead to the creation of a new government are planned. Fidesz- Hungarian civic alliance party led by Orban, and the Christian Democratic People’s Party are contending with the opposition party Tisza (Respect and Freedom) Party. Its leader is a former government official, Peter Magyar, who has the goodwill of the EU leadership and the majority party in the European Parliament, the European People’s Party.
