Tit-for-Tat Tensions Rise as Mali and Burkina Faso Impose Travel Ban on US Citizens

Mali and Burkina Faso announce that they will reject the entry of U.S. citizens in their countries, as the Trump administration did.

In the recent past, the two West African nations were subject to a full entry ban by US President Donald Trump in the extended travel ban.

In different declarations, they indicated that they would take the same action against the US nationals.

Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, the foreign affairs minister of Burkina Faso, stated that his government was doing so on the principle of reciprocity, and the Malian foreign ministry demanded mutual respect and sovereign equality.

The latter expressed regret over the action of the US and said that the decision was so significant that it was taken without prior consultation.

The move by Mali and Burkina Faso follows days after the state news agency of Niger reported that Niger had also put a similar travel ban on US citizens, although there has been no formal word by the foreign ministry of this country to confirm these.

The three nations are placed under the military juntas that took over power through coups.

They have created their own bloc in the region and have turned to the West, towards Russia, after strained relations with other states in the region and Western powers.

In early January, the White House stated that it will impose full-entry restrictions on individuals from the three countries, South Sudan, Syria, and holders of Palestinian Authority passports.

The ruling would take effect on 1 January and would safeguard the security of the US, it said.

The administration also relocated Laos and Sierra Leone, which had already been under partial bans, to the comprehensive ban list, and imposed partial bans on 15 other states, such as Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

The White House indicated that the limitations will last until the same countries record credible progress in identity management, information-sharing, and collaboration with the US immigration departments.

It has several exceptions and will not apply to the legal permanent residents, several current visa holders, diplomats, and sportspeople who travel to participate in major sporting events.

Case by case, the authorities indicated that there would be case-by-case waivers in cases where it is in the national interest to travel.
