Trump Threatens Mexico With 5% Tariff Hike Amid Escalating Water Dispute

Trump Threatens Mexico With 5% Tariff

Mexico has failed to supply more water to aid farmers in the United States, so President Donald Trump is threatening to add another 5 percent tariff on Mexico on 8th December, claiming that the country has not complied with a treaty between the United States and Canada that provides information about the sharing of water between the two countries.

According to the treaty, Mexico will be required to supply 1.75 million acre-feet of water to the U.S. via a series of intertwined dams and reservoirs every five years across the Rio Grande.

According to the treaty, Mexico will be required to supply 1.75 million acre-feet of water to the U.S. via a series of intertwined dams and reservoirs every five years across the Rio Grande.

Trump indicated in a social media post that Mexico owes the U.S 800,000 acre-feet of water as a result of the breach of the treaty within the last five years.

He ordered Mexico to discharge 200,000 acre-feet of water by December 31, and additional water before long thereafter.

Trump said water was damaging crops and livestock in Texas.

Trump stated, “Mexico is not cooperating, and it is quite unjust to the U.S. Farmers who are in need of this water. That is why I have sanctioned a procedure to set a 5 percent Tariff to Mexico in case this water is not discharged, IMMEDIATELY.”

An official of the Ministry of Economy in Mexico could not comment on the same immediately.

In April, the American Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, announced that Mexico had accepted an increased volume of water shipments to Texas in an effort to compensate for a deficit in the water agreement of 1944.

Mexico has presented the case that it is experiencing droughts that have overstretched the water resources in the country.
