The UK-based two charities are facing a pivotal scrutiny for transferring a fund of around £5.7 million to a high school that is located in Susya. Susya is considered as an illegal settlement under international law because of an Israeli settlement observed in the occupied West Bank. According to the information decoded by The Guardian, the high school which received the fund was Bnei Akiva Yeshiva and the charities that were involved in this activity are Kasner Charitable Trust (KCT) and UK Toremet Ltd. The nations who are against the brutality of such illicit groups and settlements in Israel are raising questions over the approval that is granted by the UK’s Charity regulator, the Charity Commission. And they defend themselves by quoting that all these efforts are made to support education which is a legally acceptable charitable purpose.
Why it is observed as a serious concern by the global nations is because such fundings support those illegal settlements directly which contradict with the international norms and potential that eventually fosters the occupation overtly. And, this action has been condemned by the former Conservative chair Sayeeda Warsi who stated it as ‘appalling’ while the Labour MP Andy McDonald called for legal action to prohibit those UK-origin funding from those illicit settlements. Also, he added that these kinds of charities must be stripped off from their status and must face prosecution.
The given information of the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) emphasises that they have received stratified complaints and acquisitions over this issue and they are urging the Charity Commission to act accordingly. Highlighting the consequences of such donations leading to violation of human rights and illicit land appropriation. Thus, this case underpins the importance of infusing the transparency in the charitable operations and a stern regulation which must be practiced against such charities to assure the justice and legality of international philanthropy.
