Alejandra Argumedo Alegre, a 30-year-old online content creator, has been at the center of a heated storm after a video surfaced where she is heard spewing racist and discriminatory insults at other metro commuters. In the clip, she is irritated by the crowded bus and taunts commuters, triggering outrage on social media.
Argumedo protests loudly in the recording about the bus crowd, swearing she does not deserve to be treated “like an animal.” When challenged by another patron, she continued with insults against people from the mountains, their culture, and laughed in a condescending manner. She also used derisive references to llamas, vicuñas, and alpacas, which only added to public indignation.
The video spread like wildfire, accumulating thousands of comments condemning what she did. Critics called the reactions appalling and unacceptable, questioning how a public figure could be so openly discriminatory. Reactions, commentary, and memes dominated social media, and the scandal was one of the most-viewed online scandals in Peru.
Argumedo then shut down her Instagram and TikTok accounts, essentially stepping back from online existence. She had previously been very active in creating content and guesting regularly on the “Hinchas al Aire” podcast. Scandal has left many of her fans questioning whether this is the end of her career in the limelight.
The incident again sparked controversies of social media accountability, decency as citizens in public places, and the power of behavior on the internet. Argumedo’s remarks have the public angry with calls for accountability, along with bringing attention to the endemic issue of racial discrimination in daily life.
