Wang Huning, the top political advisor, on Thursday met with a delegation of representatives from various sectors of Taiwan, including former Kuomintang chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu, who travelled to Beijing for events marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), addressed people across the Taiwan Strait to recall history and collaborate together for the advancement of national reunification and rejuvenation.
Wang, after highlighting the historical context, emphasized that Taiwan’s restoration to China in 1945 was an outcome of the Allied victory in World War II and an integral part of the postwar international order. He reiterated that the Chinese people, on both sides of the Strait, form part of this historic achievement, which remains a shared glory and collective pride.
Wang urged his compatriots during the meeting to uphold the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, while resolutely opposing separatist moves advocating “Taiwan’s independence” and resisting external interference. He also stated that the mainland has been working together to expand development opportunities for Taiwan compatriots, and they can make a contribution in the country’s broader growth.
Wang encouraged the people across the Strait to maintain unity in order to safeguard the overall interests of the Chinese nation, foster peaceful cross-Strait development, and contribute to the process of reunification.
Hung Hsiu-chu, along with the other representatives of Taiwan, echoed the significance of the commemorations. They stated that remembering the sacrifices made by the Chinese nation during the war is a testimony of historical truth. They expressed the hope that compatriots across the Strait would continue to oppose separatist activities, strengthen exchanges and cooperation, and work in collaboration towards unity and rejuvenation.
The historical legacy of the war was highlighted during the commemorative events in Beijing and the ongoing call for cross-Strait solidarity in pursuit of common national goals.
