Thailand’s PM-elect hopes to bring confidence through cabinet picks

Earlier this month, the Prime Minister-elect of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, named the former Treasury Department head, the top oil and gas official and a respected diplomat to engage in running the finance, energy and foreign ministeries of the country.

Through his first cabinet picks, the PM is hoping to “bring confidence” to a country struggling to address political and economic challenges. Anutin assumed in current role on September 5, capping off days of political drama.

These high-profile appointments come at a crucial time for Thailand, especially as the country has been seeing its economy not performing as great as expected amid months of political instability. Thailand’s economic progress has been lagging in comparison to regional peers.

Thailand and Cambodia agree to ceasefire after days of bloody fighting

Late in July 2025, Thailand and Cambodia reached a ceasefire after days of brutal fighting that killed dozens of people on both sides. This fighting also displaced more than 300,000 people. The ceasefire brought an end to a brutal crisis.

Global leaders and experts in multiple countries closely monitored the situation. The leaders of Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia agreed to a truce deal during talks in Malaysia. They agreed to end hostilities and resume direct communications.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia called the ceasefire an important step in the direction of “deescalation and the restoration of peace and security”. The armed conflict killed at least 38 people in multiple locations along the 800 km border.
