Tensions in the Sky: Dutch Military Shoots Down Drones Over Volkel Air Base

The Ministry of Defense stated on 22nd November that the military of the Netherlands fired on drones above the Volkel Air Base in the eastern region of the country, but did not find any wreckage.

The drones were reported by security staff of the base between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday, which caused the air force to launch ground-based weapons to put them down, and the ministry reported this in a statement.

The statement said the drones had been abandoned in the region.

During the last weeks, a sequence of accidents concerning drone flights that are not identified has been reported around the military locations located in the Netherlands and adjacent Belgium.

The ministry claimed that both the Dutch military and the civilian police were investigating, and it was not clear why the drones were flying over and around the air base. Not even a single detail was given on the grounds of security.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force has a base at Volkel Air Base.

The statement indicated that the flights of drones in the Netherlands around all airports are not allowed in the country due to flight security measures and other security measures around military installations.
