Student Traffic Initiative (STV) is back in Bubaneshwar and Cuttack - Details here

The Student Traffic Initiative which has been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been revoked by the Police Commissionerate on Monday, 28th July. The initiative paved the way for 53 college students that includes 23 female volunteers who have been put up on duty to support the traffic management operations in Bubaneshwar and Cuttack.

35 of the volunteers will be positioned at traffic junctions in Bhubaneswar, while 18 will serve in Cuttack. With a minimum work hour of 3 hours daily, receiving Rs 200 as compensation. The initiative gives volunteers the flexibility to choose their duty timings and locations.

The STV initiative will enhance traffic management and encourage community participation in maintaining road discipline, Commissioner of Police S Dev Datta Singh said.

Volunteers will collaborate with existing traffic police to strengthen road safety measures and ensure better adherence to traffic rules. Their responsibilities encompass managing traffic flow, helping pedestrians cross roads safely, and notifying authorities of traffic violations, additional CP Narasingha Bhol said.

Apart from providing exciting opportunities for student volunteers, the STV also highlights the shortage of staff in the capital’s traffic police wing which currently has 500 personnels. The STV scheme, introduced in 2017 in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, encourages student participation in traffic regulation. It also aimed to address staff shortages while offering students.
