Somalia’s army has killed 29 members of the al-Shabaab militia group in the town of Jabad Godane, southeastern Somalia, in collaboration with global forces, the Ministry of Defence confirmed Thursday.
Al-Shabaab has been fighting a guerilla war against the central government of Somalia since 2007 with the goal of installing its own government in accordance with its version of sharia law.
According to the statement issued by the ministry through X, the government also destroyed vehicles and “weapons meant to be used in attacking civilians through terrorist acts,” through air operations in the Middle Shabelle region during the same night.
The Ministry of Defence expressed appreciation to international partners for support in cooperation on security, sharing of intelligence, and enabling activities in the fight against terrorism, though they did not mention which international partners they were thankful to.
