Sea Monster Museum to Close for Four-Week Makeover

A fossil museum housing a giant sea monster called the Sea-Rex will close temporarily to undertake a makeover.

The Etches Collection in Kimmeridge, Dorset, said the project would involve replacing old cabinets within the gallery, providing improved access to the exhibits and “more room for new and exciting fossils”.

The museum contains a huge collection of late Jurassic period fossils, including the 150-million-year-old skull of the marine reptile.

Steve Etches nearly discovered all the fossils and established the museum to exhibit his discoveries.

The museum will be closing down from 3 November and will reopen on Monday 1 December.

The museum explained the gallery upgrade would also allow it to build a stable humidity environment to enhance the preservation of its specimens.

The 2m-long pliosaur skull unearthed from a cliff close to the museum was put on display at the museum in January 2024 and featured in a BBC film hosted by Sir David Attenborough.

It also earned it a place in the Guinness World Record books following its discovery as being the most intact of its kind on Earth.
