Panic in Niamey After Gunfire Erupts Near International Airport

Heavy gunfire and explosions were heard near the international airport in Niger’s capital, Niamey. The sounds caused panic among residents living close to Diori Hamani International Airport.

Eyewitnesses and videos shared online showed air defense systems firing into the sky at unknown targets. The firing reportedly began shortly after midnight and continued for nearly two hours before the situation became calm again.

Officials later said the situation was under control, but no detailed explanation was given. There is still no confirmation about what caused the explosions or whether anyone was injured. The military government has also not released an official statement so far.

The airport is located about 10 kilometers from the presidential palace and also houses an air force base. Authorities are trying to find out if the incident is connected to a large uranium shipment that has been stuck at the airport. The shipment has been delayed due to ongoing legal and diplomatic tensions with France after Niger’s government took control of its uranium mines.

Niger has been facing security challenges in recent years. The country, along with neighboring Burkina Faso and Mali, has been dealing with attacks by jihadist groups across the region.

Military leader Abdourahmane Tiani took power in 2023 following a coup that ousted the elected president and currently holds power in Niger.
