In a major escalation of the ongoing conflict, Israel’s security cabinet has approved a plan to seize control of Gaza City, marking a significant shift in its military strategy against Hamas. The five-point plan, approved by majority vote, aims to disarm Hamas, return hostages, demilitarise Gaza, assume full security control, and establish a new civil administration independent of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.
The Israeli military stated it will “prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid outside combat zones.” The move is expected to involve relocating up to one million residents, sparking international condemnation.

The United Nations and several countries, including the UK, Australia, Finland, and Turkey, have warned that such an operation risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences. Critics say the plan jeopardizes the lives of the estimated 20 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.
Currently, Israel controls around 75% of Gaza, with most civilians pushed into the remaining areas. UN estimates say 87% of the territory is either militarised or under evacuation orders. Aid agencies report severe famine conditions, systemic violence at humanitarian aid sites, and widespread malnutrition, especially among children.
The move has drawn domestic criticism as well, including from families of hostages and opposition leaders.
