House Republicans back up Donald Trump on efforts to make DC safer

Earlier this month, House Republicans backed US President Donald Trump’s significant effort to make the capital state safer. This represents a further heightening of the GOP’s scrutiny of the capital city and its opposition Democratic elected leaders.

James Comer from Kentucky said he is going to haul Council Chair Phil Mendelson and more to Capitol Hill in September 2025 for a detailed hearing. This public grilling is possibly because of Trump’s takeover of DC’s Metropolitan Police Department nearing an end.

The DC Council’s radical, soft-on-crime agenda has emboldened criminals and put public safety at risk in US’s capital, Comer noted in a statement. This situation is making global headlines, closely monitored by media agencies and decision-makers across the globe.

Republicans argue that DC is largely unsafe

James Comer is one of many in the GOP hailing Donald Trump’s recent decisions to seize control of the DC police force and deploy the National Guard in the capital. Speaker Mike Johnson also appears to be supporting the move.

The Speaker recently said in a post on X that House Republicans support the US President’s decisions to end the series of crimes happening across DC and to restore the beauty of one of the greatest capitals globally.

Republicans are of the opinion that DC is largely unsafe, reported Politico. You can hear reports of a spate of carjackings and other recent high-profile incidents luring the attention of GOP. These incidents also include the assault of a Trump administration staffer.
