France Signals Support for NATO as Trump Presses Greenland Claim

France has called for NATO to hold a military exercise in Greenland. The French presidency said the country is ready to take part. The statement comes as tensions rise over Greenland. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested the United States could take control of the Danish territory.

On Tuesday, Trump was asked how far he would go to seize Greenland. He replied, “You’ll find out,” during a brief appearance at the White House.

France said a NATO exercise would help show unity among allies. President Emmanuel Macron’s office said France is willing to contribute to the exercise.

Trump said he believes NATO members will reach an agreement on the issue. Speaking before leaving for the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said discussions were planned and things would “work out.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the situation needs calm and careful diplomacy. He said tensions exist, but dialogue is the best way forward.

Over the weekend, Trump also threatened new tariffs on European countries. These include Britain, France and Germany, which have sent troops to Greenland in support of Denmark.

Trump rejected claims that his actions could damage a recent deal with the European Union. He said Europe needs the agreement more than the US.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen responded strongly. She said the EU would react in a united and firm way if tariffs are imposed.

Many European leaders have so far tried to avoid open conflict with Trump. They have focused on quiet talks and compromise. Trump says the US needs Greenland for security reasons. He has pointed to possible threats from China and Russia. His comments have increased concern among European allies.
