The global geopolitics is quite an interesting topic for discussion. China, Taipei and the US are certainly a big part of it, especially since Donald Trump became the President of the US for the second time. Here is an update.
It has been reported that Trump recently said that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping told him China is not going to seize control of Taipei as long as he is in office. The US President made the comments ahead of talks alongside Russian leader Putin.
Trump called himself “patient” and China, too. The US and Chinese Presidents held their first confirmed telephonic discussion of Trump’s second presidential term in June. Trump also noted earlier that Xi had called him but did not elaborate much on this.
Importance of Taipei topic in China-US relations
China considers the neighbouring Taipei as a part of its territory and has promised reunification by force if necessary. But the democratic island of Taipei strongly objects to Beijing’s claims. This situation is tense than it appears.
This month, the Chinese Embassy in the US capital described the topic of Taipei as “the most important and sensitive issue” in China-US relations, according to a report from CNN. The US is Taipei’s main arms supplier and international supporter.
Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said in a statement that the US should adhere to the one-China principle and the three US-China joint communiques, handle Taipei-related issues prudently and safeguard China-US relations and peace and stability across the region.
