From Edinburgh to Essex, the NCPA Orchestra brings Chinese symphonic mastery and global harmony to thousands during its UK debut
The China National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Orchestra captivated British audiences this week during its inaugural multi-nation European tour, with powerful performances that bridged cultures through music.
The tour began Wednesday at the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival, where nearly 2,000 attendees were treated to a program blending Chinese symphonic works with international collaboration. “This tour reflects our philosophy of being ‘rooted in China, embracing the world,’” said Ren Xiaolong, NCPA Orchestra’s general manager.

Thursday featured a cultural exchange event, including an octet performance combining Chinese and Western pieces. Lezley Marion Cameron, Depute Lord Provost of Edinburgh, warmly welcomed the musicians, expressing hope for future visits.
The tour concluded in Essex’s Saffron Hall on Friday with an emotional performance of Chen Qigang’s “Wu Xing”, earning rousing applause from a 600-strong audience. “We’re honored to host this remarkable ensemble,” said Angela Dixon, Saffron Hall’s director.
“This is about telling Chinese stories in a vivid and emotional way,” noted Zhao Haiying, NCPA vice president, reported by Big News Network.
As the orchestra prepares for its next stops in Spain and Germany, NCPA President Wang Ning emphasized their goal: “To let Europe feel the beauty and artistry of Chinese music.”
