Chinese and US officials hold discussions on economic relations

Late last month, China’s trade representative Li Chenggang came to the US on a high-profile official tour. He and multiple US officials held discussions on bilateral economic and trade relations, as per the Chinese commerce ministry.

Li and representatives from the US Department of the Treasury, Department of Commerce and Office of the US Trade Representative held talks on the implementation of prior agreements. Different media agencies across the globe closely monitored this situation.

During the meeting, Li said both sides need to manage differences and expand bilateral cooperation through equal dialogue and consultation, reported Reuters. These discussions also come amid confusing Beijing-Taipei relations.

Beijing not going to invade Taipei during Trump’s presidency?

The US does not formally recognise Taipei as a country but remains its largest arms supplier (besides being a significant security partner too). The US military forces also conduct joint military drills to counter China at frequent intervals.

Beijing claims Taipei as its territory. China has repeatedly objected to deepening US-Taipei bilateral relations. Last month, the Foreign Ministry of China reiterated its opposition to any official exchanges featuring the US and Taipei.

But earlier last month, against a backdrop of tense China-Taipei relations, Trump noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered him assurances that Beijing is not going to invade Taipei during his presidency.
