It is all about “breaking the stigma” and making the planet a better place to live in. Harborlight Credit Union recently hosted a community picnic and all proceeds got to the Hope Squad at Whitehall and Montague high schools in the US.
Hope Squad is an effective peer-to-peer suicide prevention programme and Whitehall and Montague are a couple of about six such programmes in Muskegon County. Money has been raised through the sale of raffle tickets at the picnic.
Seeking to make a notable impact on the community, the picnic also raised money through the sale of hot dogs, popcorn and more items. Hope Squad plays a significant role in helping people talk openly about mental health.
Hope Squad offering training and resources for suicide prevention
Donna Brumm at Harborlight said Hope Squad began as a high school in Utah. It is an efficient programme as it has been reported that Provo City School District improved from 1-2 suicide cases per year to zero in nine years. Isn’t it incredible?
Hope Squad is currently present at all schools that seek to implement the programme to take care of the mental health of student members. The programme is meticulously overseen at each school by trained faculty experts.
Student members of Hope Squad are trained to recognise the symptoms of a mental health crisis. They also learn to talk about suicide prevention among their peers. The Hope Squad organization offers all necessary training and resources.
