Bolsonaro faces trial: Brazil orders ankle monitors and a ban on social media

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is in deep trouble again. On Friday, July 18, 2025, Brazil’s federal police searched his house and political office. The order is from Brazil’s Supreme Court, who think he may try to flee the country to avoid trial. Bolsonaro is being investigated for whether he attempted to overturn the 2023 election results, which resulted in President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s rise to power. To prevent him from fleeing or influencing the case, the court imposed rather extreme restrictions on him.

CNN reports that the court believes Bolsonaro may attempt to evade prosecution in connection with alleged efforts to overturn the 2023 presidential election won by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

What Conditions Has the Court Imposed on Bolsonaro?

To get control of the situation, Brazil’s supreme court imposed the following conditions on Bolsonaro:

  • He will wear an ankle monitor at all times.
  • He is prohibited from using any social media.
  • He may not speak to any foreign diplomats.
  • He is prohibited from visiting any foreign embassies or consulates in Brazil.

These conditions are meant to attempt to prevent Primo from fleeing the country or requesting assistance outside of Brazil.

Global intrigue:

Things took another twist when Brazilian authorities said Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo, tried to find support from the United States. He was working in Washington, D.C., to push former President Donald Trump to support Bolsonaro.

As reported by Fox News, the court believes there is a “concrete risk” of Bolsonaro evading justice amid an ongoing trial related to his alleged efforts to overturn Brazil’s 2023 election.
