Saeed Izadi: Israel claims killing "one of the orchestrators" of October 7 Hamas attack

Highlight: Israel recently said that it killed Saeed Izadi, a senior Iranian commander and “one of the orchestrators” of the Hamas October 7 2023 attack on southern Israel.

The Middle East crisis has been raging on since the brutal October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed some 1,200 people in Israel. Soon, the Israeli military launched retaliatory strikes and at least 56,000 people have been killed in Gaza, as per the Palestinian health ministry.

The regional tensions flared up recently as Israel launched a fierce air attack on June 13, attacking Iranian nuclear facilities and killing top military commanders – in a significant hit to the Islamic Republic since the 1980s conflict against Iraq.

Iran retaliated and barrages of missiles started to hit military sites, infrastructure and cities across Israel. The US entered the situation on June 22 as it attacked Iranian nuclear facilities. Both Iran and Israel entered a ceasefire on June 24, 2025.

Israel claims assassinating Saeed Izadi in Qom strike

Israel recently said that it killed Saeed Izadi, a senior Iranian commander and “one of the orchestrators” of the Hamas October 7 2023 attack on southern Israel, in a strike on June 21 on an apartment in Qom, south of Tehran.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has described the killing as a significant point in the conflict. “The blood of thousands of Israelis is on his hands,” BBC quoted IDF chief Eyal Zamir as saying. Iran has not reported Izadi’s assassination.

If Israeli reports are confirmed, the killing represents a major hit to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The attack happened as the brutal conflict engulfing Israel and Iran entered its ninth day. The conflict lasted for 12 days.

Mourners line streets of Tehran as Iran holds funeral

The Iranian health ministry has put the death toll in the recent fighting at 610 on the Iranian side. More than 4,700 others have sustained injuries. Israel’s health ministry has reported that 28 people died in Israel and 3,238 others got injured.

On June 28, large numbers of mourners dressed in black lined the streets in Tehran as the country held a funeral for top military commanders, nuclear scientists and some of the general public killed in the recently concluded conflict.

The fighting lasted 12 days. The state media has reported that at least 16 scientists and 10 senior commanders had been among those mourned at the funeral, including armed forces chief Major General Mohammed Bagheri.
