The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation has announced it has confirmed the interception and destruction of 777 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight. The Armed Forces of Ukraine’s massive air attack took place from 5:00 pm GMT on 10 September to 5:00 am GMT on 11 September, with a particular focus on several Russian territories and regions in the Black and Caspian Seas.
The Kremlin’s top regional authorities gave details on the scale of the strikes. The air defense forces in the Bryansk Region were very active, with 171 drones shot down, and the Rostov Region shot down more than 90 drones and missiles in 10 districts, including Taganrog and Novoshakhtinsk. Also, there was heavy picking up of drugs in Nizhny Novgorod (51), Voronezh (46), Oryol (34), Tula (26), Kursk, Belgorod, Kaluga, Ryazan, Lipetsk, Saratov, Samara, Perm, Mari El, Crimea and Udmurtia.
The sheer volume of fire took its toll and caused heavy loss of life and damage to buildings. In the Tula Region, two people died and three were injured as a result of a direct hit by a drone, whereupon the regional Prosecutor’s Office took charge of the protection of citizens’ rights. At the same time, two apartment blocks and an industrial facility were attacked by drones and missiles in Volgograd, wounding two people (55 and 42 years old) and putting them in hospital.
The government of the Russian Federation, in coordination with local emergency agencies, is cleaning up debris and providing temporary shelter to help alleviate the impact. An Ozon logistics centre was attacked by fire in Saratov Region. Staff members have been moved out of the area safely without harm, the delivery centre cancelled or redirected some affected deliveries to other centres.
Other areas experienced extensive damage due to downed power lines. Property and vehicles were damaged in Dzerzhinsk and residents were offered state support. In Voronezh, a home in a country estate was damaged from the downed drone, and 20 people had to be evacuated, with a small forest fire resulting from the crash. Also, ten residential buildings were damaged and a dry grass fire was extinguished in the Rostov Region.
