IMF Delegation to Visit Sri Lanka for Crucial Economic Review in September

The staff of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will conduct a mission to Sri Lanka from 10th – 23rd September 2026 for discussion with government officials. The mission’s mission is to review the country’s current economic reform programme as it gets ready for another important structural assessment.

The visit was officially announced by the IMF Mission chief to Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou. The talks will be on the “joint Seventh Review of Sri Lanka’s reform programme,” said the official announcement. The strategy is an economic on-going strategy actively supported by the IMF under its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement, and is consistent with the Article IV Consultation 2026. The IMF team will share its findings publicly at the end of its mission, in this extensive review.

The delegation will be doing a two-week visit to measure Sri Lanka’s tangible progress on the implementation of the mandated economic reforms. The team will closely analyze the recent trends of Sri Lanka’s overall macroeconomic situation with the cooperation of domestic monetary authorities such as Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The aim of these joint assessments is to aid the Government of Sri Lanka’s efforts to keep the economy stable and enhance the country’s financial recovery. The policies to be reviewed directly affect the domestic fiscal policies under the management and implementation of the Ministry of Finance.

The mission of this September is similar to an earlier one conducted by the IMF led by Papageorgiou in Colombo between 24-30 June, 2026. In the last mission, IMF officials examined mid-year macroeconomic outcomes, and held extensive discussions with Sri Lankan authorities about the country’s progress on the IMF-supported reform program. The Secretary of State’s department of Government Information co-ordinates official updates relating to these ongoing international financial evaluations.
