President Donald Trump is convening his Cabinet at Camp David Friday. The talks will largely focus on the current war with Iran, as well as the growing gasoline prices that are now a threat to the Republican campaign in the midterm elections to be held in November.

The president has been a long-time visitor to the Maryland hideaway, and has usually preferred his own golf resorts when out of Washington. But this weekend’s visit is his third trip to the facility on the mountain during his second term.

It’s the 13th Cabinet meeting for the president in his second term, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. In a recent briefing, she said the move would create an “exotic and fun” opportunity for the high-level administration to get together.

Foreign Policy Focus and Midterm Anxieties

The longstanding conflict has adversely affected the local economy, especially through skyrocketing fuel prices. As a result, public acceptance has fallen to a record low. The latest poll from the news agency Reuters and the pollster Ipsos shows that only a third of Americans still approve of the war, the lowest level of support since early in the conflict.

Republican leaders are feeling the pain of the economic consequences as they turn their eyes to November. Democrats are aggressively exploiting these weaknesses to try to gain control of the U.S. Congress from the GOP.

It’s well known that Trump’s Cabinet meetings can last for more than an hour. Generally, they contain reports from each of the secretaries of each department and much commendation of the president. After the Camp David meeting, Trump will head to his Bedminster, N.J., golf club for the rest of the weekend.
