Cyprus is making progress for the first time in the history of the island in the production of its own defence equipment, instead of buying everything from abroad.
Greek defence firm M Technologies, the defence wing of Metlen, has inked a deal with Cypriot firm Heutris to establish a joint venture in Cyprus for developing and manufacturing defence systems in the country.
The decision is a significant development for the Cypriot defence industry as it aims to build new production capabilities, share specialised know-how and establish local expertise in an industry traditionally dominated by larger nations.
Under the agreement, the companies will continue developing military vehicles as part of the SAFE program run by the European Union, as well as the development of other projects in the field of production, integration, maintenance, and support of military equipment.
How does this impact Cyprus?
Defence manufacturing, to the average citizen, might seem a preserve of the big guns with large military industries.
However, the companies involved claim that the project could open new opportunities for the island due to the skilled positions it will offer, the training of local workers and the improvement of Cyprus’ industry.
In addition to purchasing defence equipment from outside, Cyprus is able to gradually master the production, maintenance, and support of some defence systems locally.
The agreement comprises the transfer of know-how from M Technologies to the development of new skills and capabilities within Cyprus, having been involved in major international defence programmes.

M Technologies has been involved in significant Defence contracts such as the manufacturing and servicing of Patriot missile systems, Leopard tanks and components for the FDI HN (Belharra) class of frigates for Greece, and has been involved with key international Defence industries.
Meanwhile, Heutris is an established defence industry company, having over 45 years of experience and being involved in defence, government and industrial projects.
The two companies claim they aim to establish a long-term industrial presence in Cyprus and set up a production line that could not only boost local industry but also the entire region.
